About
Logic Surfer John
My name is John, I am a Computer Software Technology student in the University of Arizona’s Global Campus Bachelor’s degree program. To date I have recently crossed the halfway point and just completed the general education requirements. It is encouraging to be starting on the classes specific to the computer software technology major.
My background consists primarily of clerical work which
could best be described as record-keeping.
There were many reports due as a part of this clerical work and in the
process of preparing these reports I conducted some rudimentary data
analysis. As for technology, or IT
experience, apart from using a computer to keep records, there is only limited IT
experience. I designed and maintained
databases as a part of keeping the records.
The databases were kept in Microsoft Access and I used some VBA to organize
the databases. Without knowing it, I was
also learning SQL (along with more VBA) to analyze the data to complete
reports. When I couldn’t get Access to
do what I needed, I fell back on Excel to analyze the data. To that end, I wrote many formulas in Excel
and even used a bit of VBA to create a few custom functions.
Going forward, I do not have a specific career in mind. I am hopeful that getting an education in
computers will open many doors. To
further broaden my horizons, I am working on a Data Analysis certificate
through Coursera. It will be interesting
to see what opportunities arise.
